The policy may apply to buildings, roads, parkland and other property owned or managed by the City. It may also apply to major facility components, such as rooms, pavilions, playgrounds, bridges, paved trails and prominent outdoor spaces.
Naming City Facilities
The City of Kyle has a formal process for requests to name or rename City facilities, including buildings, roads, parkland and other property owned or managed by the City.
The policy helps ensure naming requests are reviewed carefully, include appropriate community input and reflect names with lasting public value. Final decisions are made by Kyle City Council.
Start Here
1. Review the naming and renaming policy before submitting a request.
2. Complete the City Asset Naming Application and return it to the City Secretary’s Office. If you have questions about which process applies to your request, contact the City Secretary’s Office before submitting materials.
NOTE: Do not collect petition signatures until City staff confirms that a petition is required and provides direction on the required petition form, signature requirements and next steps.
Submitting an application starts the review process. It does not guarantee approval.
What Requests May Be Considered
Naming or renaming requests are generally reviewed under one of the following categories:
- Exceptional individuals
- Historical events, places or persons
- Major gifts or financial contributions
Requests should show why the proposed name is appropriate for the City facility and how it reflects a meaningful connection to Kyle, the surrounding area or the public asset being named.
Renaming an existing City facility is strongly discouraged. Existing names carry public recognition, and requests to rename a facility are reviewed carefully.
How the Process Works
The process may vary depending on the type of City facility involved, but generally includes:
- The applicant submits an initial written request or application to the City Secretary’s Office.
- City staff reviews the request and identifies the appropriate review process.
- If a petition is required, City staff will provide direction on the required petition form, signature requirements and next steps.
- The request may be reviewed by the appropriate City review body, such as an ad hoc committee or City board or commission.
- Public notice, public comment or a public hearing may be required.
- The request is forwarded to Kyle City Council for consideration.
- City Council may approve or deny the request by resolution.
