Therapeutic Recreation

The City of Kyle Parks and Recreation Department is thrilled to offer Therapeutic Recreation Services to connect people of all abilities together through accessible recreation, promoting independence, confidence, and improving overall quality of life. Therapeutic Recreation Services include both adaptive and inclusive programs, facilitated by Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) and dedicated supporting staff. Kyle Knighthawks - Special Olympics Team

Join the Kyle Knighthawks Special Olympics team, where athletes of all abilities train and compete with heart and dedication! We currently offer bowling, soccer, bocce, and swimming, with practices designed to prepare athletes for Special Olympics Texas competitions. Check out the information below to see which sport is in season and how you can get involved!

Get ready to roll with the Kyle Knighthawks for Special Olympics Bowling! This program offers a fun and supportive environment where athletes of all abilities can build confidence, learn bowling skills, and enjoy the benefits of recreation, teamwork, and friendly competition. 

Thanks to our special sponsor, practices will be held at EVO Entertainment Kyle (3200 Kyle Crossing, Kyle, TX 78640) on Thursdays from 6:00–7:30 PM, beginning October 2 through November 13.

Registration is a one time fee of $15 for residents and $17 for non-residents. Registration is open now and spots are limited, don’t miss your chance to be part of this exciting new season!

Athletes will have the chance to showcase their skills at the Special Olympics Area Bowling Competition taking place some time between November 11-16 2025 at SpareTime in Pflugerville, Texas.

Competition will begin with Opening Ceremonies at 9:30AM each day, followed by the first competition shift of the day starting at 10:00 AM CST. Our exact competition date is TBD. Registration is welcomed despite being unsure of availability for competition!

Open to athletes ready to learn, play, and have fun! Special Olympics Bocce is an inclusive and accessible sport that offers athletes with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical skills, teamwork, and strategic thinking in a fun and supportive environment. Individuals with any ability and skill levels are encouraged to participate!

Get ready to make a splash with the Kyle Knighthawks for an exciting season of Special Olympics Swim! Our program offers a supportive environment for athletes of all abilities to build confidence, improve swimming skills, and enjoy the many benefits of aquatic fitness and teamwork.

We offer two sessions based on skill level:

  • Session 1 – Skills Group: 6:00 PM – 6:45 PM

  • Session 2 – Advanced Group: 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

*Athletes should register for one session based on their current skill level.

All Abilities Dances

Our All Abilities Dances are designed to bring people of all abilities together to celebrate, socialize, and enjoy music in a welcoming environment. We host four dances each year, each with its own unique theme and opportunities to create lasting memories. Check out the event pages below for details on our upcoming dances and join the fun!

These events are open to all ages and abilities. Parents and guardians are welcome to drop off participants, while those requiring additional support may bring an attendant. Please note that all participants and accompanying adults must register online at KyleRec.RecDesk.com before the event. We can’t wait to see you there!

Step into a winter wonderland at our Winter Wonderland All Abilities Dance, where the season comes alive in a festive atmosphere filled with music, dancing, and community. Join us for an unforgettable evening where everyone is welcome, and create lasting memories together!

Date & Time: Friday, December 19  5:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Location: Gemstone Palace  (1101 Bunton Creek Rd, Kyle, TX 78640)

Admission Fees: $3 for Kyle residents & $5 for non-Kyle residents

The Social Squad

Welcome to The Social Squad - a social club for adults (18+) with disabilities. The Social Squad is your place to socialize, connect, and engage in fun recreational activities.

The Social Squad is a therapeutic recreation program designed to support adults with disabilities through engaging, purposeful, and socially enriching activities. Our goal is to foster connection, build confidence, promote independence, and encourage lifelong leisure skills in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Participants will engage in a variety of structured activities that support physical wellness, cognitive stimulation, creative expression, and meaningful social interaction—all while having fun and making friends!

The Social Squad is specifically designed for individuals with disabilities, offering a supportive and inclusive environment. All participants must meet the below criteria to ensure that participants can fully engage and benefit from the services offered. Eligibility criteria helps to maintain appropriate group dynamics, ensure the safety of all participants, and facilitate the successful delivery of program services.

  1. Ability to function independently or with minimal support in a group setting during program hours.
  2. Demonstrate socially acceptable behaviors, including respect for self and others, and adherence to program guidelines.
  3. Independence in essential self-care tasks such as feeding and bathroom needs.
  4. Participants requiring additional support with medications, bathroom needs, and feeding may attend with an attendant or caregiver.**

*Parents and guardians are welcome to drop off their participants, and those requiring additional support may attend with an attendant.*

Step into our Sensory Tent at select City of Kyle Parks and Recreation events, providing a quiet and calming space for individuals of all ages with sensory sensitivities. The Sensory Tent will be a designated area where individuals can take a break from the high volume and excitement from the crowd. Join us in a soothing environment equipped with sensory friendly items such as fidget tools, mindful mazes, noise-canceling headphones, and cozy bean bag chairs.
