Victim Services

The Victim Services Division works to assist victims and witnesses who have been impacted by crimes such as family violence, stalking, sexual assault, child abuse, homicides, missing persons, traffic fatalities, and aggravated assaults.

The two primary functions of the Victim Services Division include crisis response (on-scene) and follow-up support. Crisis response provides emotional support and intervention as close to the time of the event as possible. This intervention may consist of stabilization, personal advocacy, justice support, emergency protective services, shelter placement, and referrals to other essential resources such as Crime Victims Compensation. Follow-up support assists victims in putting their victimization in a pro-healing context, by providing supplemental information and access to resources, visits (to the home, school, and hospitals), ongoing justice support, court accompaniment, and community debriefings.

Victim Services Volunteers respond to crime scenes, when requested, and provide crisis intervention, support, assistance and resources to those who have been affected by the incident.

Volunteers will complete a victim services training program to have a comprehensive understanding of the role, and the skills and support necessary to help victims of crimes. They are required to commit to one 12-hour on call shift a month. Volunteers will only need to be available to respond to a call if one comes in on their shift.

Volunteers must meet the minimum requirements, fill out and application and pass a background check. The minimum qualifications are as follows:

Must be 21 years of age or older
Must have a vehicle, maintain insurance coverage on the vehicle and have a current and valid driver’s license.
Must be able to make a one-year commitment and attend monthly meetings/training sessions, that will take place at either the Kyle Police Department or the San Marcos Police Department.
Must be able to maintain professional demeanor in crisis situations.
Must be able to maintain strict confidence.
Must be of good moral character.
Must be able to interact with several classifications of people and treat all victims/survivors in a courteous and professional manner.
Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision.
