Animal Services

Animal Services helps keep the public safe from dangerous animals and protect domesticated animals from abuse or neglect by enforcing local ordinances and state laws. They handle various animal-related calls for service including stray animals, animal abuse or neglect, barking complaints, animal bites, and other aggressive behavior. Additionally, they provide wildlife education and resources to Kyle residents.

Resources

Pets residing within the city limits of Kyle, Texas are required to be registered with the Kyle Police Department as per city ordinance.

A license will be valid for the pet's lifetime if the pet is microchipped and registered with the owner's current information, and if the pet has been spayed or neutered. However, this license can be revoked in accordance with section 5-33. If the dog or cat has not been spayed or neutered, the license will be valid for one year from the date of issuance, unless it is revoked under section 5-33. All residents of the city are required to have their dogs and cats, four months of age and older, implanted with a microchip that is registered with the owner's up-to-date information.

The Animal Control Division uses Pet Hub for its pet registration system. Pet Hub provides an online pet profile and a 24/7 hotline call center to provide your neighbors with the information needed to return your pet home safely.

To register your pet with the City of Kyle, please mail in or drop off the following documents to 1700 Kohler's Crossing, Kyle, Texas 78640:

For added convenience, local veterinary hospitals offer pet registration services for their clients at their facilities.

The City of Kyle has a limited number of spay/neuter vouchers available to city residents to cover the cost of the spay/neuter surgery at PALS Prevent a Litter in San Marcos.

There are three ways to apply for a voucher:

Please provide proof of residency and rabies vaccination certificate with voucher applications. Proof of residency may include a government issued ID or City of Kyle utility bill with an address inside the Kyle City Limits.

The San Marcos Animal Shelter serves all of Hays County, including the City of Kyle. The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter is located east of Interstate 35, at 750 River Road in San Marcos, Texas.

Lost or Found A Pet

The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter attempts to contact owners if the pet has a tag or microchip. It is important to keep both of those updated with your current contact information. The lost and found list is only a reference for the public and should not be relied upon solely to find a lost pet. Please come to the animal shelter to look for and identify a lost pet.

The holding period for a stray animal is generally 3 days, or 5 days if the animal appears owned due to a microchip or ID tag. The Animal Services division can use discretion to disposition an animal prior to the expiration of the holding period depending on the animal’s condition, temperament, and jurisdiction of impound. At the end of the holding period, stray animals become property of the City of San Marcos and will be dispositioned as needed.

If you know your animal is at the shelter, you must go to the shelter or contact them at 512-805-2655 within the holding period to reclaim your pet. If your pet is lost, please be sure to visit the shelter at least every 3 days as some pets can show up weeks and even months after they go missing.

Please Note: Lost and found reports are posted on the Internet and visible to the public. Once the stray hold period is expired, they may be listed on our Adoptable Animals page if they are still at the shelter.

The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter relies on volunteers to assist with many of the programs that the shelter participates in, and to assist with everyday duties at the shelter.

Donate to the Shelter

The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter has many members of the community that want to help the shelter. Although they are publicly funded, they have limited resources. You can donate via credit card directly online or donate needed items.

Kyle Animal Control is seeking Volunteer Caregivers to assist with Kyle's Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return (TNVR) Program.

The TNVR program works with local volunteers, and shelters to trap and impound free-roaming cats, or community cats, to neuter, vaccinate, microchip, ear tip and return cats back to where they were found.

Volunteer Caregivers are volunteers that take on the responsibilities required for the proper maintenance of specific Community Cat colonies such as regular feeding of colonies, human trapping for adoption, neutering, or medical care, monitoring of the colony, and reporting of relevant information and colony data pursuant to TNVR policy guidelines. Volunteer Colony Caregivers assume all responsibility for the humane trapping, maintenance, and management of approved registered colonies.

The process for the humane care and treatment of adult Community Cats and kittens eight weeks of age or older are:

Trapped, impounded, or placed in a carrier or kennel, transported, and temporarily housed and cared for.
Neutered by licensed professional veterinarians.
Vaccinated against rabies.
Ear tipped and micro-chipped; and
Returned back into their original location, if possible.

How do I register my pet with the City of Kyle?

What are my requirements as a citizen and pet owner under the city ordinances?

Licensing of animals: All animals four months of age or older which are kept, harbored or maintained within the corporate limits of the city shall be licensed.

Identification for animals: All animals within the city shall be marked by some type of identifying license, tag, band, tattoo or brand by which the animal's owner can be identified. Animals exempted from this requirement are mice, rats, rabbits, guineas, hamsters, gerbils, ferrets, fowl and snakes.

Report incidents: (a) Report of victim. Any person who is bitten or scratched by an animal shall report that fact to the animal control officer within 24 hours. If the person bitten or scratched is a minor under the age of 17 years, the parent or guardian of such minor, if he has knowledge of the incident, shall report that fact to the animal control officer within 24 hours. (b) Report of owner. A person who owns, keeps, harbors or allows an animal to remain on premises under his control and who has knowledge of a bite shall report to the animal control officer within 24 hours any incident where such animal bit or scratched any person.

What are the required vaccinations for my pet?

All dogs or cats four months of age or older within the city shall be vaccinated against rabies. Such vaccinations shall be repeated at the intervals prescribed by rule of the state department of health, or its successor.
