Wildfire Safety

Wildfires are unplanned fires that burn in natural areas like forests, grasslands or prairies. These dangerous fires spread quickly and can devastate not only wildfire and natural areas, but also communities. Learn how to prepare for a wildfire, stay safe during a wildfire, protect your health when you return home after a wildfire, and find recovery resources in your area.

Wildfire Safety Steps

Plan ahead to keep your household safe:

  • Know your risk: Be aware of wildfire-prone areas and identify your evacuation routes.

  • Family plan: Establish a communication plan and practice an evacuation drill. Assign an out-of-area contact person everyone can reach.

  • Emergency kit: Include 3 days of food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and a hand-crank or battery-powered radio.

  • Pets: Arrange for boarding facilities or animal shelters in case you must evacuate.

  • Documents: Keep insurance, medical, and ID records in waterproof containers and store digital copies securely.

  • Sign up for alerts: Register at WarnCentralTexas.org for emergency notifications.

If a Fire Weather Watch is issued:

  • Review your emergency plans and refill supplies, including prescriptions.

  • Reconfirm your evacuation routes and ensure your vehicle is fueled.

  • Keep phones charged and important documents ready to grab quickly.

  • Check local air quality conditions.

  • Follow updates from the City of Kyle on Facebook.

  • Prepare to shut off utilities if evacuation orders are issued.

Protect yourself from smoke, ash, and fire hazards:

  • Stay indoors with windows closed if smoke levels are high.

  • If you have asthma, COPD, or heart disease, monitor symptoms closely and follow your healthcare provider’s guidance.

  • Avoid exposure to ash or debris — stay a safe distance away from the fire area.

If you are ordered to evacuate:

  • Leave immediately. Never ignore an evacuation order.

  • Take essential items only — medications, documents, pets, and supplies.

  • Turn off utilities and close gas valves before leaving.

  • Follow designated evacuation routes and expect heavy traffic.

Return home only when officials say it is safe.

  • Continue monitoring local authorities for updates and resources.

  • Avoid hot ash, charred trees, and smoldering debris. Hidden heat pockets can reignite fires.

  • When cleaning up ash:

    • Wear long sleeves, gloves, and a respirator mask (N95 or better).

    • Avoid sweeping or blowing ash into the air; gently wet surfaces before cleaning.

    • Keep children and pets away from affected areas.

  • Document all property and personal damages for insurance claims.

How Disaster Declarations & Assistance Are Issued

After a disaster, declarations can be issued at the local, state, and federal levels of government, with the type of assistance available depending on the level of government that declares the disaster. The City of Kyle handles disasters through our emergency management plan. However, if the severity of the disaster is beyond local government capability, we will issue a disaster declaration and appeal to the state for additional resources. Federal disaster assistance only becomes available after a presidential disaster is declared. The Texas Governor must request a disaster declaration from the President.
