4 Most Common Home Hazards and How to Avoid Them

KYLE, TEXAS – Emergencies can happen anywhere, even in your own kitchen, basement, or backyard. Being aware of hidden home hazards is the first step in keeping your family safe.

While large-scale emergencies such as natural disasters, power outages, and severe weather make headlines, common household risks can also cause serious injury or property damage. The City of Kyle’s Emergency Management Division urges residents to be aware of these everyday hazards and take steps necessary to prevent emergencies at home.

Common home hazards include:

  • Kitchen Fires: Small appliances, grease buildup, and unattended cooking are leading causes of kitchen fires. Residents should clean stove vents regularly, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and never leave food unattended while cooking.
  • Gas Leaks: Faulty appliances or damaged gas lines can lead to fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Regular inspections, proper ventilation, and functioning carbon monoxide detectors are essential preventative measures.
  • Chemical Spills: Cleaning products, yard chemicals, and other toxic household substances can cause burns, poisoning, or respiratory issues. Always store chemicals upright, in their original containers, keep them out of reach of children and pets, and never mix incompatible substances.
  • Frozen Pipes: Extreme cold can cause pipes to burst, leading to water damage and costly repairs. Insulating exposed pipes, letting faucets drip during freezing temperatures, and keeping cabinet doors open can help prevent pipes from freezing.

“Everyday hazards in the home can be just as dangerous as larger disasters if disregarded,” said Kyle Emergency Management Coordinator Jimmy Johnson. “Residents can protect themselves and their families by knowing the risks and taking simple preventive steps.”
