Depending on the type of project, you may be required to obtain a permit and register with the City. Please check with the Building Inspections Department for any requirements regarding the building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing codes and/or any ordinances adopted by the City. If a permit is required, the homeowner must provide proof of homestead to do the work themselves. Some work must be done by a licensed professional. Permits are required for the following:
- New buildings: dwellings, garages, storage sheds, carports, etc.*
- Window and exterior door replacement.
- Swimming pools and spas/hot tubs.
- Alterations/remodeling: new or relocating plumbing or electrical wiring.
- Installing or replacing heating and/or air conditioning equipment.
- Moving or demolishing buildings.
- Patio covers, decks and carports.
- Installing or replacing a water heater/water softener.
- Installing irrigation systems.
- Installation of solar panels.
*Residential structures and/or decks under 200 square feet, that are not attached to the dwelling do not require a permit. Decks 30 inches or more above grade are not exempt from permit requirements.
